My Mom Never Slept
I’m fairly certain my Mother never slept when we were growing up. She was awake to get the five of us pajama-d, brushed, and off to sleep. She was awake to prepare our breakfasts, lunches, and walk us to school.
If I ever woke in the night with a bad dream or feeling sick, Mom could be found sewing at the dining room table or relaxing in her chair with a movie.
A Magical Fairy
While we slept, Mom’s creativity soared. She’s like a magic fairy! One night, I went to sleep, passing a pile of satin and lace on my way to my bedroom, and awoke to a mauve dress (Don’t judge, it was the 80’s). Overnight, Mom sewed me a dress for the Winter Formal.
My Mom’s creativity and can-do attitude means all of our holidays feel special; actually, most of our “regular” days do too! We delivered flowers in hand-made holders to the neighbors on May Day. We enjoyed decorated sugar cookies on Valentine’s Day.
I’ll never forget the St. Patrick’s Day when I strolled through the kitchen to find Mom cooking green pancakes. I struggled with the color, however I forced myself to eat them anyway. They were pancakes, after all.
One of Mom’s specialties is finding unique, crafty holiday décor ideas and bringing them to life. We built a Halloween village from milk cartons and construction paper. Pretty neat, huh?
Though we used paper napkins, even on holidays, Mom made sure they were never plain. The felt holly napkin rings survived decades of lasagna Christmas dinners. I have decided to carry on the tradition.
