At 9pm in our house, homework stops for tea time. The husband and the teenagers pause for a bit, gather around the kitchen island, and enjoy a cup of tea. It’s nothing fancy. No crumpets or scones, just a warm drink accompanied by some familial conversation before winding down for the night.
I usually brush my teeth at tea time. I don’t care for warm drinks. They make me feel like I’m drinking shower water. This explains my absence from this nightly family event.
We have a kitchen cabinet stocked with a variety of tea bags. Different flavors suit various times of the year and assorted moods. They look forward to tea time.
When the boy graduated last spring, the only appliance he requested was an electric tea kettle. The only food he grabbed from the kitchen when we moved him into the dorm was a box of tea. He loves his nightly tea.
I’ve been trying to keep the boy in adequate supply, and was looking for a creative way to deliver his tea for December. I came across Bonnie’s Christmas Tea Tree on her blog, Thirsty For Tea and knew what my next craft project would entail.
Tea Bag Christmas Tree Materials:
- paper mache cone
- tea bags (individually wrapped)
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
- ribbon or other embellishments
I searched for individually wrapped tea bags in the colors I desired. I wanted some green for the tree branches, sprinkled with some colors to represent the lights. Using a paper mache cone from the craft store as the base, I heated up my glue gun and got to work.
I placed a simple line of glue at the top of each bag, attaching tea bags around the bottom of the cone and then working my way up. I added splashes of color as I worked the tea bags toward the point of the cone.
When only a bit of cone remained at the top, I created a bow using wired ribbon and attached it with a dab of hot glue.
Just look at the results! I am pleased, and look forward to surprising the boy with his Tea Bag Christmas Tree.

This is a creative gift idea for anyone who enjoys drinking tea. Instead of wrapping a boring box of tea, this is exciting and novel. And if one wants to get a box of tea also, it can be wrapped and be the base for the tree when giving the gift. Thanks for the tutorial!
Denise says
I appreciate your kind words, Lin. Good idea, using a box of tea as a base. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!

Wonder if using a styrofoam cone and straight pins would work also. Easier to take off and use. Cute idea. Want to try this this year for gifts.
Denise says
Great idea, Df’Anna! I envision decorative pins acting as ornaments. Send a picture if you make it. Thanks for reading.

Sounds like a great idea! You could attach hot cocoa packets with hot glue, similar to the tea bag process. I would love to see a picture of your completed tree!
